Emerald City Waters

Seattle skylines, waterfronts, and the water that holds the city together.

    Everything I love about this city in one frame. The Needle, fresh snow on the mountains, and a state ferry doing the same crossing it does every hour of every day.

    Wooden Boats, Lake Union.

    Standing on a hundred coats of someone else’s varnish work at the south end of Lake Union. The museum keeps the history indoors; the boats outside are still doing their jobs.

    Between the Piers.

    The waterfront is loudest at the edges and quietest in the gaps. I stood in the slot between two piers and let the Sound have the middle of the frame.

    Spring at Seattle Center, where the magnolias bloom close enough to borrow the skyline. I focused on the petals and let the Needle stand back for once.

    Autumn shows up in this park as a single tree that refuses to be subtle. The concrete, the boulders, and the boat traffic below become its supporting cast.

Bloom & Vine

Botanical color at close range: blossom, fruit, and foliage.

  • Dense cluster of ruffled double pink cherry blossoms with reddish young leaves against a white overcast sky

    Full Bloom.

    For about ten days a year these double blossoms stack themselves into pom-poms too heavy for their branches. I shot into the overcast sky to let the pink carry all the weight.

    Passionflower Crown.

    The passionflower looks engineered rather than grown, a fringe of violet threads under that strange raised crown. I wanted the architecture sharp and everything else dissolved.

    A single bloom holding its own against a wall of shade. The spiral at the center is the part I always end up staring at, long after the petals stop being the point.

    Caught mid-change, half the canopy already scarlet and half still deciding. The little winged seeds hang on through all of it, ready to spin off on the next wind.

    Evening light does something petals cannot do alone. Shot from the side as the sky went blue, with one porch light burning a hole in the background.

    Nothing here is dead, it just looks that way from a distance. Up close the branches are carrying whole ecosystems, moss and lichen trading territory an inch at a time.

    Grapes in July, still hard and green and full of plans. I like photographing fruit before it is ready. All promise, no proof.

Quiet Studies

Monochrome and near-monochrome: texture, water, and winter.

    From up here the ridges repeat until they run out of contrast, each one a fainter blue than the last. The storm never quite arrived; it just kept rearranging the light on the valley floor.

    By late winter the field grasses have given up standing and lean into each other like they are done with the season. The backlight was the only thing still holding them up.

    Split Second Sea.

    A thousandth of a second turns water into glass. One wave against the rail, frozen in the shapes it only holds for as long as no one can see.

    First Heavy Snow.

    Six inches of snow will make sculpture out of anything, including the top of a fence post. The flakes were still falling, unwilling to call the job finished.
